Signs you need a switchboard upgrade

Believe it or not, your switchboard could be older than you think and unless you’ve had an electrician check it out recently, you might have a problem on your hands. You can call one of our licensed experts in Lismore, Byron Bay, Tweed Heads,  Murwillumbah and Ballina to take a look and see if you are up to standard. New Australian law dictates that the switchboard, in the box out-back, must have something called an electrical safety switch installed. These are also called RCDs. A switchboard upgrade involes the installation of a modern safety switch as an important developments in electrical protection because they can detect and isolate electric faults in your circuits almost instantly. How long have you been living or operating out of your residential/commercial property? Can you remember if you’ve ever had your switchboard upgraded? Maybe you’re renovating your property or even just doing something as simple as installing new appliances. All of these things pose a potential risk to the integrity of your electrical system if your switchboard is out of date and out of line with the law.

We’re using much more electricity for our fancy gadgets and appliances, so the switchboards need to be updated to keep up with the times. It may not seem like it, but your fuse box could be housing a potential fire hazard and we need your help to spot it. Give us a call at Cave Electrical and Solar and we’ll have it sorted out for you in no time. Here’s a few signs that you need an expert to perform a switchboard upgrade:

Signs I need a switchboard upgrade

  • It looks overcrowded

Does the wiring look like it’s squashed together and there is barely any room? Apart from this not being a problem at all if you had a newer model switchboard (which can easily accommodate multiple circuits without crowding), switchboards that are overloaded are a law contravention and safety hazard.

  • Your appliances trip the switchboard

Is there that one socket you don’t use anymore because you tried to plug in a vacuum cleaner that one time, and it caused a short circuit? Older switchboards are not energy efficient, so they are more prone to experiencing short circuits because of certain appliances. They’re just not built to handle new technology, and this has so many dangerous implications for you.

  • Random flickering lights

This is usually a bad sign because it means that lightbulbs are loose, or wires are not where they’re supposed to be. If you see any flickering lights, call one of us anytime, day or night, and we’ll be there as a matter of urgency.

  • Burning smells, black or melted fuses

Usually accompanied by a feeling of heat radiating off the board, any signs of burning are an immediate cause for concern. Old switchboards are not very good insulators of heat, so if you can feel any heat, then your switchboard needs to go. Warmth or burnt bits are not normal in any regard and need to be fixed to avoid electrical faults more likely to cause a fire. Many cases of fire on residential and commercial properties in Australia can be traced back to some sort of electrical fault. If there’s one thing you take away from reading this, when it comes to switchboards, please let it be this: HEAT, MELT or BURN is BAD. Not just for your switchboard but for every electrical outlet or wiring you may come into contact with.

  • Low buzzing sounds

This is pretty self-explanatory. Your switchboard should not be making any sounds because that is a sign of strain on the circuits. If you hear anything buzzing, humming or worse a sizzling sound, it’s time to call a local electrician for an upgrade and quick.

  • The age of your home

Antique finishing and any other old-style fixings in your home or office are usually a sign that the property (and the switchboard), could be older than you. This could be a sign that you need a switchboard upgrade or at least give you enough evidence to have it checked out. You should also give us a call if you simply cannot remember the last time an electrician had a look at it.
